d'Arenberg The Stump Jump Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
Sweet crème de cassis and mulberry, aromatic violets with a twist of blackcurrant leaf, if you were in any doubt as to the wines varietal provenance. Shows beautifully elegant on the palate but still offers plenty of dark, sweet fruits. The mint and leafy notes work as a nice counter point to the more luscious mulberry fruit. The cedary notes and fine grained tannin draw the wine to a long and focused finish. Primary, balanced and vibrant in youth, this wine is as appealing now as it will no doubt be in 3-5 years. A wet summer and winter in set the vines up perfectly for the 2012 vintage. Spring and summer were drier than normal, resulting in lower fruit yields. A small heat burst just prior to veraison assured a solid colour change, small berries and pronounced tannins in the grapes. The red wines from this vintage are black, solid and quite structured, the biggest year for some time; not oily but definitely gutsy. Vinification: The grapes used in this wine are mostly from very old bush vines, and underwent gentle crushing, traditional open tank fermentation, basket pressing and oak maturation prior to bottling.
